Naked Ladies

Once when I was 11 years old, my mother was driving us home from school one august afternoon and said,

Oh my, look at all those naked ladies in that yard!

Zoop. My sister and I turned our heads quickly to the right. Only a yard. With flowers.

Mamma explained that they are called naked ladies because they have no leaves clothing their stems.

These days, I hear people call them spider lilies.

Our first lady opened today.

  1. LOL!

Reminds me of the time I was in college, and out the window of my dorm room, I saw a Labrador Retriever, obviously the mother of new pups, and I shocked my roommate by exclaiming, "Oh, look at that big, black bitch!"

  2. What a funny name for a flower :) But they are beautiful.

  3. Those are definitely a fancy kind of Naked Ladies, which I haven't seen before. There are many kinds of amaryllis, but they aren't all naked when their flowers bloom. Around here (northern CA) we have a plainer pink kind.

  4. Bwahahhaahahha, that totally cracked me up.

I'm not sure I've seen them (but heard of them) I am off to Google if they grow out here. Or, I could just be non-observent, which is often the case.

  5. too funny - we always called them surprise lilies since you never knew where they would pop up, and they seemed to grow overnight!

  6. So sister got some recently. They are really beautiful!!!

  7. beautiful..wish I could see them in person. I wonder if any came up in our yard. I am anxious to get home.
